Preserving tradition & the people who define your family

Have you ever been at your mom's, or grandma's house, looked around and thought- "I always want to remember this".

They are sitting in their chair talking about some story they always tell and knitting away, or cooking, or holding the cup of coffee they always have in hand.... surrounded by the home they created that shows so many facets of their life and personality.

These sessions are focused on the documentation of a person, or tradition. The people, the environment, and the feeling that is had there. It is truly the recording of your family's history. Nothing posed, or forced. It is the creating of a visual time capsule that will transport its viewers back to the way things used to be.

There are so many every day traditions that are a mainstay of what defines your family. There is a person whose very presence defines your family. Whether you are wanting to document the making of your family's sauce recipe that's been handed down from generation to generation, your family's monthly pancake making get together, or your grandfather, aunt, or father in their home, or in their element doing what they are skilled at or love.

A Monthly Tradition

This session was focused on documenting a monthly tradition for the women in this family. They get together, make yummy food, dress up themselves and their table, and share what's going on in their lives.

Letting it Unfold

My purpose is to be as much of a fly on the wall as possible, so that everyone acts the way they normally would. I want to be able to document the way things usually go.

Documenting the environment

So much of family traditions can be the environment itself and the things that are present. "If these walls could talk" is a quote that describes this perfectly. The dishes served, the serving ware, the manner in which a table is set, the home where it takes place. All must be photographed to tell the complete story.

Simple Moments

This session was scheduled right before the daughters mother and father were heading back to china after helping during the transition of having children. Moments like grandma feeding the baby were a huge priority and one they wanted to always be able to look back on.

Authentic & Genuine Portraits of your loved one

Having a session in your family members home environment, or basing it around an activity they do all the time will produce portraits that authentically record the individual. They look happy and at ease in the images because they are in an environment, or doing something they are comfortable with. That's what these sessions are all about- documenting your family and their traditions in an un-forced and genuine manner.

How does it work?

This session operates like a documentary photoshoot. There is an initial questionnaire upon booking and then a session planning call. This call will be where I will get a sense of what you are looking to document and what aspects are most important to you and those involved. Typically one individual will be the focus of the session, or the activity itself will be the focus.
