One of the most beautiful things about documentary photography is that almost anything can become the perfect backdrop for your family session. And yet, when it’s time to plan, so many families freeze — wondering what they should do to make their photos turn out “right.” I am partial to in home sessions, BUT I love traveling to different locations with family's as they do a activity together.
The truth is, your best images happen when you’re simply doing something you genuinely enjoy together. And here in Sussex County, we’re surrounded by places that make that easy. From quiet, everyday routines to seasonal outings and local favorites, this area is full of meaningful spaces that naturally reflect your family’s personality.
Below are a few of my favorite local spots that create beautiful, authentic settings for family time — and for photographs that feel true to you.
Green Valley Farm
Green Valley Farms is one of Sussex County’s sweetest gems — quite literally. Known for its delicious homemade ice cream and sweeping countryside views, it’s the kind of place that makes family time feel effortless. Kids can feed the goats and chickens, explore the three playgrounds recently added, and wander freely while parents relax and soak in the scenery. Throughout the year, there’s always something seasonal to enjoy — getting lost in the fall corn maze, picking pumpkins, cutting your own flowers in the summer, shopping for fresh produce, or settling into an Adirondack chair as the sun dips low. It’s a playful, picturesque setting that offers so much natural variety for a documentary family session.
Sparta Bowling Alley
Bowling at Sparta Lanes is playful, nostalgic, and full of personality — which makes it such a fun setting for a documentary family session. The sound of pins crashing, kids carefully lining up their turn, high-fives after a lucky strike (or even a gutter ball), arcade breaks, shared pizza at the table — it’s relaxed and real in the best way. The glow of the lanes and the movement of the game create dynamic, joy-filled images that feel completely authentic. It’s not about perfect scores; it’s about laughter, teamwork, and documenting your family doing something you genuinely enjoy together.
The Lafayette Mill
These buildings have so much character and the mill has endless nooks and crannies to explore in and outside of the antique shops. Get some coffee at the Millside cafe, visit the park right next door, play in the babbling brook, or even go fishing. This little gem has so many different areas that will create a diverse gallery for your family's photoshoot.
The Library
The library is such an underrated gem for a documentary family session. The quiet stacks, the ritual of picking out books, the way your child curls into your side during story time — it’s intimate and beautifully ordinary. Whether it’s your weekly visit or a special outing, documenting your family in a space built around imagination and learning adds depth to your story. These sessions feel calm, cozy, and connection-focused, with moments that show not just what your family looks like — but what you love together. Newton, Sparta, Franklin, and Vernon all have libraries.
Turtle Back Zoo
For families who love a little adventure and don't mind leaving Sussex County, Turtle Back Zoo offers movement, curiosity, and genuine reactions at every turn. The excitement of spotting animals, little hands gripping the railing, sticky snack breaks, map-checking, laughter — it all unfolds naturally. Documentary sessions here are vibrant and full of personality. Instead of asking children to stand and smile, we let them explore. The result is expressive, joy-filled storytelling that feels completely true to your family.
The Farmers Market
Farmers markets are rich with texture and seasonal charm. From choosing fresh flowers to sampling local honey to carrying a paper bag of peaches that’s just a little too heavy — these are the kinds of real-life interactions that photograph beautifully. The natural colors, outdoor light, and slow wandering create a relaxed backdrop for connection. These sessions feel grounded and community-centered, perfect for families who want their images rooted in the rhythm of Sussex County life.
Stokes or Highpoint State Park
For outdoorsy families, Stokes and High Point offer sweeping views, wooded trails, lake shores, and space to simply be together. Whether it’s hiking, skipping rocks, collecting leaves, or sitting quietly at the overlook, these sessions embrace movement and meaningful pauses alike. The natural landscape adds a timeless quality to your images — open skies, textured trees, wind in your hair. It’s less about posing and more about presence, allowing your family story to unfold in a place that feels expansive and free.
The State Fair at the Sussex County Fairgrounds
The NJ State Fair is pure summer nostalgia — and an incredible setting for a documentary family session. From sticky fingers wrapped around cotton candy to the thrill of midway rides, blue-ribbon animals in the barns, and sunset light glowing over the fairgrounds, every corner offers movement and memory. These sessions are lively and colorful, full of candid reactions and shared traditions. Whether your family goes every year or it’s a first-time experience, photographing a night at the fair preserves not just what you did — but the energy, excitement, and joy of being there together.
Planning your family photo session doesn’t have to feel like just another thing on the calendar. When you choose an activity in Sussex County that already feels like you — an ice cream stop, a farm visit, a slow morning at the park, a walk by the water — your session becomes less about “taking pictures” and more about preserving what this season of life actually looks like.
The beauty of choosing a meaningful location is that your photos will hold more than smiles. They’ll hold movement. Personality. Inside jokes. The way your child reaches for your hand without thinking. The way everyone settles into their natural rhythm when they’re busy doing something together.
Years from now, you won’t just remember what you looked like — you’ll remember what it felt like.
So as you plan your family photoshoot, think about the places your kids ask to go again and again. Think about the simple traditions that already belong to you. Those are the moments worth documenting.
Your story is already happening. Let’s photograph it there.
