You probably see some amazing family photos in your Instagram feed all the time. If you’re like me, you might stop to admire them and check out the photographer’s Instagram account to see more examples of the work they do. If you’re reading this, maybe you’ve finally decided it’s time for your family to invest in some really great family photos!

But with so many family photographers in Sussex County and Morris County, how do you choose the right one for your family?

I’m here to tell you that no two photographers are the same and that choosing a photographer who understands and respects your family and has good chemistry with you is going to be key in picking the right photographer! Here are a few things to consider when choosing a family photographer.

What kind of photos do you want?

A great place to start is deciding if you want the photos to be posed, or have a storytelling & documentary feel.

Storytelling photography focuses on documenting the family as they really are. Instead of asking the family to conform to the photographer's preferences, a storytelling photographer will be focused on how to artistically portray the family in a genuine way. Storytelling photographers work on getting to know their clients prior to the session and making them feel comfortable during the session. They will direct in small ways (mainly due to where the sunlight is, or most beautiful areas of a location), but the intent will always be to capture the dynamics that are unique to the family they are working with.

How Does the Photographer Work With Children?

My main goal (besides taking amazing photos) is to be supportive and sensitive to everyone I work with- this includes your little (or big) kids. Perfect behavior is not expected, nor desired. It can be easy to think everything should go "smoothly" during photo sessions, but most of the time, that's just not the case. There are always little bumps (just like in real life) and big emotions that can happen. This is normal and when kiddos are involved- developmentally appropriate.

My approach is completely play-based and child led. Using my client questionnaire I get to know your family prior to the session (likes, dislikes, sensory needs, favorite songs/games/shows). I also prepare the parents for what their session will be like- aka. look at their session as intentional family time and try to leave expectations at the door. I remain flexible and strategic during sessions- my best work is created in the moment. I have games and tricks I utilize when needed, but really do feel creating a comforting and low-expectation environment is the key to a session going well and getting authentic images.

In the end, the photos are important, but not as important as being respectful to everyone, most importantly the children, and making sure they are not pressured or forced to do anything.

Does the Photographer Help with Styling?

One of the biggest ways clients prepare for their photoshoots is by picking the outfits. This can be stressful and sometimes costly. My goal is making it as easy as possible for my clients to choose their outfits and feel great about them.

I have a curated client closet for women and children with a wide selection of photo-ready outfits in different sizes- these are included in your session fee. I also subscribe to a service called Style & Select in which clients pick their color and style preferences and then Style & Select provides examples of outfit combinations- then my clients can pull items they already have, or from my client closet that will photograph amazingly together. There is cost savings and the peace of mind that your outfits will photograph well together.

Building an Ongoing Relationship

Building a lasting bond with your photographer brings heaps of perks beyond just snapping photos. Firstly, getting to know each other makes you feel comfortable in front of the camera, resulting in more genuine shots. As time goes on, your photographer gets what makes you tick, your style, and your vibe, so they can tailor their snaps to fit you like a glove. This ongoing partnership sparks creativity and lets you both try out new stuff, pushing boundaries and getting even more artistic photos. Plus, sticking with the same photographer means you can count on top-notch quality and peace of mind knowing they've got your back and you get the same quality & style of work for each photoshoot. And as life keeps rolling, having a go-to photographer means you can capture all those special moments along the way, building a visual story of your journey. So, building a relationship with your photographer isn't just about photos—it's about preserving memories you'll treasure for ages.
